Teaching Statement
My Pedagogy is centered around the importance of curiosity. I believe the way to pursue growth is by asking questions: why, what, how?
Why is that correction not working for that student?
What can I do to push that student farther?
How can I instill critical thinking into my students?
The moment a teacher thinks they know all, is when they fail. Each generation and class I teach will bring with them new knowledge and perspectives, and respecting that will help me continue to learn.
Each student is valid and earns the same respect and trust from their teacher. I strive to create an equitable environment, where students never doubt their worth in the classroom, or determine their self-worth in my actions. I will work to debunk toxic comparison and favoritism as a tradition. Instead, I will prioritize teaching students to value their own progress, over comparing themselves to others. So, that they may work in a safe space where classmates are supporting them in their journey.
I will work to learn how each student works in the classroom both mentally, and physically; remembering that every dancer’s body and brain function differently. And while respecting this originality, not diminishing anyone to one box of criteria. I believe branding students as the “flexible one” or “turner” creates a sense of doubt in all dancers involved. They should feel a sense of confidence in all aspects, stemming from the idea that if they work on it, it will come.
I will acknowledge effort and good work when shown and provide support to push them harder when I believe they are capable of more. I will acknowledge the ideal in ballet, but push them to reach it in their individual way; to self-assess their own work and experiment what works best for them.
I will instill curiosity into my students and encourage them to ask me questions. As well as advocate for themselves and feel as if they have a sense of authority. Conversation that is on track will be an essential part of my class to ensure critical thinking is embedded into the learning process. The ability to question one’s body mechanics and find a solution through experimentation is a long process; but, it is my ultimate goal as teacher, that my students be confident in their self-assessment skills before they move on.
My passion for the art of ballet is rooted in the artistic expression, but also the constant challenge and discipline that it requires. I hope to share this love with fellow artists to create an environment that serves as a creative outlet and as a time to work. And I will strive to find this balance, by prioritizing endless curiosity and learning.
